GREENWICH PLAYERS SHINE AT NATIONAL CARNIVAL

Greenwich Admirals success stories continue to boost Rugby League in the South of England with the recent success of the South East England squad winning the England Carnival on 30th May in Derby.

Greenwich players attended the selection trial in Elmbridge where appointed Coach Dave Roberts and Team Manager Duncan Smith, both from the Admirals, put 30 players through their paces in order to select a 20 man squad to attend the carnival.

Lorne Dixon, James Spark, Nicholas Agbo, Manbir Mann, Paul Hyder, Richard Flisik, Josh Thorneycroft, Raphael Sikwabi and Angelo Thomas all made the South East England team who then went on to the England Carnival and beating North East England 26-16 in game one, Drew 28 all with North East England in game two to finish in top spot in Pool B.

The final was played against Yorkshire in front of the England Lionheart selectors and the South East remained undefeated again with a golden point win 8-6. The win that little bit more special knowing that they not only beat Rugby League heartlands and Northern teams, but they did it with players who played in a division below almost of their competition.

Out of the 9 Greenwich Admirals selected for the South East squad, 3 were named to represent England Nicholas Agbo, Paul Hyder and Manbir Mann (5 from the whole South East squad) against Scotland, Wales and Ireland later this year, with Josh Thorneycroft from Admirals also being named as first reserve. Its a credit to the players and the Greenwich Admirals with the work everyone continues to put in and showing the positive growth for Rugby League in the South of England.

ADMIRALS SINK SPITFIRES

Greenwich Admirals 78th Minute try takes the spoils.

Southampton Spitfires 24 - 32 Greenwich Admirals

Current league leaders where in great form as they beat a strong Southampton side 32-24. This is the first time Greenwich have ever beaten Southampton at home and it signaled their intention to retain their status as champions.

Southampton started the game well and after some good forward drives the ball was fed wide allowing Tom Barnes to cross in the corner giving the home side a 4-0 advantage. Stand-off George Thropy was unable to convert the extras.

Soon after Greenwich responded with a clean break up the middle. Mike Thomas at full back stopped the break but the damage had already been done and with the Southampton defence in a mess the ball was spread wide for Greenwich to find a huge whole and score. Greenwich then converted the extras to take the lead 6-4.

Then Greenwich really took a grip on the game and started to make good forward progress and with quick play the balls the Southampton defence was stretched to its limit allowing Greenwich to run in two trys, one of which was converted to give the visitors a commanding 16-4 lead just before the half time break.

With the game swinging more in Greenwich favour the home side had to respond quickly and they did going on a scoring spree of their own scoring two trys in an 8 minute spell. Firstly Mike Thomas on debut cut through the Greenwich defence to score on the left hand side of the field. George Thropy adding the extras to make the score 16-10. Secondly Oli Johnson picked up a loose Greenwich pass and sprinted 80 meters only to be pulled down short of the line. The quick play the ball from Johnson allowed the Spitfires to go wide and Andrew Hoggins crossed in the corner. George Thropy missed the difficult conversion to leave the half time score 14-16.

The second half was going to be a close encounter as neither side could establish a winning lead. First to score where Greenwich who capitalised on Southampton’s poor attempt to field a high ball. The ball was allowed to bounce into a Greenwich player’s hand that went on to feed the ball wide to score in the corner making the score 14-20.

Southampton responded quickly and from an attacking scrum scrum half Alec Dyer found the full back Mike Thomas who cut a great line to score under the posts, Thropy converting the extras to tie the game at 20-20.

Greenwich then took the lead again after a mistake on the first tackle close to Southampton’s line. The visitors worked the ball close to the line sucking in defenders and then went wide to their winger who crossed untouched to extend the lead to 24-20. With a difficult kick added the lead was stretched to 26-20.

Southampton again refused to lie down and after some good work centre Laurence Warren-West powered over in the corner to make it 26-24. The conversion missed left Greenwich clinging onto a 2 point lead.

With 6 minutes to go the game could have gone either way and as Southampton went wide Greenwich intercepted the ball and went all the way to the try line. Full back Dave Strange was on hand to pull off an amazing try saving tackle and at the same time forcing the error.

Southampton did well to work the ball up field looking for the winning score and a great kick on the last was not chased well allowing the pacey winger from Greenwich to make 60 meters deep into Southampton Territory. The ball was then fed wide and the Greenwich second rower crashed over with several defenders in tow. The Player looked to have been held up over the line but the referee gave the visitors the benefit of the doubt and awarded the try. With the conversion added the Greenwich team had extended their lead to 8 points and the game was over as a contest. One more set of six was played and the whistle blown leaving the final score Greenwich 34 - Southampton 24.

Next up for Greenwich is a top of the table clash, welcoming Elmbridge Eagles on Saturday 4th June 2pm kick off down at Well Hall.

The Rugby League clubs from London and the South East are gearing up for another exciting season with representatives from the Premier, Regional and Merit Leagues coming together at The Twickenham Stoop to mark the start of a new campaign.

The team to beat in the six-club Premier Division will be national champions St Albans Centurions who hold the Harry Jepson Trophy. The season will include a Magic style round where all matches will be played at one central venue. Hammersmith Hills Hoists, the reigning London 9s champions will be out to transfer their form in the shorter version of the game into the 13-a-side competition while West London Sharks, Grand Finalists for the last three years with victories in 2008 and 2009 will be keen to make it four on the trot, making it to the big day on August 6th.

The South East Regional league boasts seven teams which means a bye for one team every week. Swindon and Oxford have joined the West Regional league but Portsmouth Navy Seahawks have been added this season and their experience at the Premier division over the last three years will put them in a strong position from the outset. Greenwich Admirals, Champions for the last two years, will be aiming for a hat trick of titles in their 10th anniversary season. They did it the hard way last year, coming from fourth to beat table-toppers Elmbridge Eagles in the semi-final playoff before defeating Guildford Giants in the final.

Northampton Demons, champions of the East division for the last two years and National Champions in 2010, have moved up to the Midlands Premier League but will still have a presence in the division through their ‘A’ team. Sudbury Gladiators will be hoping to make an impression in their debut season. St Ives Roosters, the second oldest club in London and the South East will be hoping to celebrate as premiers at the conclusion to their 20th season.

Bedford Tigers who narrowly lost the final last year will be determined to go one step further while positive noises are arising from the Bury Titans camp who lost out in the final the year before. Sleeping giants Norwich City Saxons round off the six team division in what is expected to be the tightest the East has seen in its history.

The London Merit League will see a number of new teams this year including East Enders and imaginatively titled Mudchute Uncles setting up a local rivalry to second season club Phantoms based in West Ham. The East Surrey Roosters, based in Dorking are also new to the competition and London Skolars ‘A’ will be the experienced team of the league. The newly established East Merit League boasts two new clubs, the Fenland Foxes and West Norfolk plus a number of ‘A’ sides of existing East clubs. Teams from both Merit Leagues can play cross league fixtures against one another and results will still count towards their respective divisions.

The season kicks off on Saturday 16th of April with the second running of the London 9 a-side Challenge. Hosted by current champions Hammersmith Hills Hoists, the competition will be fierce for pre season bragging rights. The RLC and Merit League seasons begin on April 30th, while the East RLC will commence on May 14th.

2011 WCAM London Youth League 9’s Under 18’s Tournament Overview

Against all the odds, nine boys of steel from Greenwich Admirals marched into the Bentwood Eels Rugby League club, who were hosting the WCAM London Youth Rugby League 2011 9's tournament, and sailed away with the bounty which is the coveted London Youth League 9's Cup, Sponsored by Harlequins Rugby League.

On arrival at the venue the task ahead from a Greenwich perspective seemed quite daunting as bus loads of teams pulled into the car park, it was evident that Greenwich were short on numbers. They only had nine players and not one single interchange. Pride was the substitute for their disposition as Greenwich were the current champions and these nine guys who can only be described as “Boys of steel” intended to remain champions.

Eight teams; Brentwood Eels, Eastern Rhinos, Hainault Bulldogs, London Skolars, St Albans, Staines, Medway Dragons and Greenwich Admirals, entered the competition and by the size of the packs, most of the teams travelled with in excess of 20 players, these teams meant business.

A mammoth task lay ahead for these Greenwich nine, but boy did they take it to task.

Coming out of their pool unbeaten and progressing to the semi-final against the hosts with a very large pack, Brentwood. This was a very tough encounter with Brentwood hoping to cash in on their interchanges. However they were not up against any ordinary team who let the luxuries of interchanges bother them. They were facing the “Greenwich nine” each player pushed the boundaries of endurance and skill to overcome the hosts to become the finalists versus Hainault Bulldogs. Hainault, like the other teams, were prepared in numbers obviously looking to utilise that factor in their favour.

The stage was set for the final. Did I just say final? Yes. Greenwich Admirals were in the Final with the same nine players that entered the competition at the beginning and progressed unbeaten without an interchange to the final. The effort these guys put in, just to reach the final was absolutely phenomenal and hugely respect-worthy. Then the Greenwich nine turned the competition on its head and made some history in the process by emerging victorious from a gruelling final at the end of which one of the Greenwich nine Angelo Thomas was awarded a trophy for player of the tournament.

These nine boys of steel should be in the "Hall of Fame" for what they achieved last Saturday and they deserve every accolade they get by this display that was witnessed at this Quins tournament. What was done today will be remembered for a long time as a monumental achievement. Well done the Greenwich nine, and well done to Greenwich Admirals U18’s coach Shaun Lang for steering the ship in stormy waters. Superb performance guys.
