With the Play Off’s at U18, U16 (North), U16 (South) and U12’s starting this coming weekend all players are reminded that they must attend training both Tuesday and Thursday. Places are up for grabs if you do not attend training you will not be selected.

All players are also reminded that they must bring both outstanding membership and match subs up to date prior to the weekend. Failure to do so will also effect selection for the Play Offs.

ADMIRALS EDGE OUT CAVALIERS

Greenwich Admirals notched their second victory of the season on Saturday, although a strong and dogged performance from Oxford cavaliers saw the away team work hard for the result.

In wet and blustery conditions it was Oxford who settled into their rhythm first, with too many Admirals mistakes leading to good field position for the Cavaliers. After a period of sustained pressure and poor Greenwich defence, the Cavaliers opened the scoring with Jack Briggs sprinting clear from half way to touch down.

This provoked a response from the Admirals, with prop Ricky McKinley and loose forward James Tait starting to make inroads in the Cavaliers defence. Eventually, after a number of sets unable to find the whitewash a grubber from Chris Williams dribbled into the in-goal area for winger Tom Gent to ground the ball just before it rolled dead. Williams was unable to convert from the touchline.

HT: 4-4

The second half started in a similar vein to the first, with errors on both sides due to the slippery conditions and poor decision making in attack. It was Greenwich who scored first in the second half, with Tait once again influential. One the 4^th tackle, Tait managed to keep the ball alive with a magnificent offload for Captain Anthony Johnson to gratefully run on to and give Greenwich the lead for the first time in the game, with Williams adding the extras to put Greenwich 10-4 ahead.

The lead was short lived, as Oxford made their way down the field due to Admirals indiscipline and a fine stepping run from Andy Blacklock left a number of Greenwich defenders in his wake as he crossed underneath the sticks. The conversion was successful, making the score 10-10.

Almost immediately Greenwich responded, when after fine work by hard working prop Scott, Williams found the experienced centre Louis Newton who burst on to the ball at pace to beat his opposite number and touch down under the posts. Williams again adding the extras to give Greenwich a 16-10 lead.

The game then started to turn scrappy as a number of penalties were traded between both teams, but Greenwich were able to get the next score when influential half back Sam Woods found Newton who timed his pass to perfection to give loose forward Tait a well deserved try. Williams added the conversion to give Greenwich a 22-10 lead.

As the weather continued to deteriorate, so did the quality of the match with errors and penalties making it hard for either team to exert the pressure they would have liked. Some crunching Cavaliers defence showed that the game was not over in their eyes, but a last minute try from 17 year old 2^nd rower Mustafa put a touch of gloss on the scoreline for the Admirals. With Williams again kicking the conversion, the game finished 28-10 to Greenwich.

After a hard-fought victory, there were a number of positives from the game such as the form of second rowers Cameron and Middlehurst, and the physical presence of winger Zampa. However, the Admirals will need identify and reflect on the areas of improvement they will need to work on before next Saturday’s top of the table clash with Elmbridge

NO TRAIN - NO PLAY

The decision has been made by the coaching staff accross the board that if the club is to progress players MUST train prior to league game. This at present is not happening and performances on the park are testiment to the lack of fitness and knowledge of game plays.

Coaches are giving up their free time to prepare players for games and are disapointed by the numbers attending sessions compared to the number who make themselves available on match days. If attendance at training dose not improve over the next week the clubs participation within the London Junior League will be reduced to accomadate only one team at U15/U16.

We appricate that this may be due to rugby union cmmitments and injuries but it only takes a phone call/text/email to let coaches know your personal situation. The ball is now firmly in your court - if you want to play this season then you must attend training. This week is your last chance.

JOE ELFIDHl

Locally based professional boxer Joe Elfidhi who hails from the game's traditional area has offered his knowledge and skills to help the club develop players' overall fitness.

Joe has been introduced to the club by Sean Franz (U18's coach) who has known him through his links with the North Kent University

Joe will work with coaching teams on the various ares of fitness and technical skills that he has used to increase his ownupper body in preperation for his professional bouts.

His first session will be this coming Thursday at Rectory Field. Joe will work with both the U16's and U18's in a two hour session.

Its a great oppertunity for players to gain an insight in how other sports prepare for competition and also beifit from their experences.

BBC London 94.9's New London Rugby League Text System‏

This season BBC London 94.9's weekly London Rugby League programme has set up a special text messaging service for the league community in and around London.

The system has been set up so fans, players and coaches as well as parents, spectators and teachers can get their club, school or players mentioned - by texting ANYTIME of the week.

"When you look at rugby league in London and the South, it's thriving at grassroots level. We want to ensure these clubs, teams and aspiring stars get the credit they deserve," said BBC London sports editor Pete Stevens.

"If people begin their message with "LRL" and send it to BBC London's text number, 07786 200 949, it falls into a special inbox here, meaning people can text any time, any day, at their convenience.

BBC London's coverage of rugby league goes back 10 years now, and each year has attempted to reflect the game's status outside of the heartlands of the sport.

"I'm hoping it will encouraging amateur players, school players and the smaller clubs to text me their experiences of playing league, so we can get their thoughts on air."

"Players or coaches can text news and information," said BBC London 94.9's rugby league reporter Ian Ramsdale, "Even if it's just "LRL I scored a superb hat-trick for my school today. Rob from Peckham". There's a lot of stuff that happens in the community game which we don't hear about, now is the time to change that."

MASTERS RUGBY LEAGUE

Masters Rugby League started in New Zealand in 1992, progressing to Australia in quick pursuit and in recent years immigrating to the UK. Masters Rugby League is a social version of the game engaging those over the age of 35. The rules are slightly modified to cater for the older gentleman, but with the man rules being no winners, no champions and no cup finals. The most important of rules being that you buy your opposite number a drink.

Different short colours apply to adhere to the player’s age bands, with modified contact per age group.

If any ex players or parents are interested in forming a team for this season please let the club secretary (Graham) know so that we can start the wheels (though they may be rusty) turning.

A number of other clubs have shown interest and formed teams. It would be good not only for you but the club as well if we could take up the challange.

COURSES AND SEMINARS

To enhance the clubs coaching and support structure the RFL has made available an extra Level 1 coaching course (Chatham 24 April & 9 May) . The course is designed for parents and players who feel they would like to get involved with the game.

The club is growing throughout an extra volunteers are needed to ensure we deliver at "Grass Root" level. If you are interested contact a member of the coaching staff or the club direct at greenwichrl@gogglemail.com for more information.

The London League proposes to run a number of seminars covering "Match Day Touchline Management" and "Referee and Touch Judge" courses. If again anyone is interested please get in touch.

ADMIRALS PREPARE FOR THE NEW SEASON

The Greenwich Admirals Rugby League club are looking forward to the forthcoming season with great expectations following their successes last summer.

Last season saw all teams through to their respective Grand Finals (a first for the club) with the adult side going onto the National stages of the competition.

This season with teams now a year older and wiser its hoped to do one better and see the youth teams progress onto the National stage. The youth sections success last season has also shown in the number of youngsters wanting to take up Rugby League.The youth section now boasts teams at U18, U16, U15, U14 and U12’s.

At the end of last season the youth section for the third season in a row tour the games traditional area of Lancashire. Playing teams with greater experience (Leigh Miners, Leigh East and Chorley Panthers) and proved not only to themselves but to the National Rugby League stage that teams from London are closing the gap and can compete on an equal footing.

With the Mears Stand now completed and further improvements underway supported by the local community and businesses the club can look forward to a bright future.

As part of this year’s program within the community the club has team up with Charlton Triangle Homes and will offer coaching and other activities as part of their summer activity program. The club will also be working with local schools (Millwall Community Scheme) hosting competitions for year seven and eight age groups and hope that this will lead to players joining the club to enhance their skills.

The club is open to all ages both male and female. If you are interested in getting involved and would like a new challenge in a fast, dynamic, physical and mentally challenging sport then Rugby League could be for you. ADMIRALS OPEN AGE KICK OFF DEFENCE AGAINTS MERLIN'S

Regional Grand Final winners 2009 will start the defence against newly formed Sussex Merlin’s on the opening game of the season on Saturday 1^st May.

The Eltham based champions are looking forward to the challenge of the forth coming season and hope again to be the major force within the region. The League is made up of Swindon St George, Oxford Cavaliers, Guildford Giants, Southampton Spitfires, Sussex Merlins, Elmbridge Eagles and South London A and home games will be played at the home of the Admirals at Well Hall.

Head Coach Jason Henley added “This year is going to be a very competitive season defending our championship. Last year is in the history books and we are looking to start the season hitting the ground running”.

Admirals open Age pre season starts on Tuesday 2^nd March, 7.30pm - 9.00pm and every Tuesday until Tuesday 30^th March then the training will move to two nights a week Tuesdays and Thursdays with the first Thursday session being the 1^st April.

YOUTH FIXTURE CONFIRMED

At last nights London League development meeting fixtures for the forth coming 2010 season were confirmed.

Point to note all fixtures on the 12 June 2010 will be played in west London as part of Harlequins community weekend. Harlequins are at home to Leeds Rhinos and it is hoped that a package will be offered to all clubs to encourage support for their game.

With fixtures being published this early this will give parents the oppertunity to plan their holidays around fixtures where possible. If holidays are already booked can parents let their relevant coach know soonest so that they can plan their season.

Also lets now have a concerted effort from eveyone to encorage new players to join the Admirals this summer. You all know the advantages of playing league had on you SO LETS GO FOR IT.

Pre season training will be confirmed onces coaches have had their meeting next week.

ENGLAND U18's COMMUNITY LIONS

The club today received confirmation that Gary Sergeant has been selected to as part of the eighteen man squad for Thursdays England Community Lions v Australian Institute of Sport at Stobart Stadium, Widnes.

This is a great atchievement for Gary and the club and we wish him well as the only representative of a London based club to make the team.

Gary joins a creditable list of players such as Rob Worrincy, Alex Rowe, Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook and Tony Club who have progressed to the international stage through the ranks of the clubs youth development programme.

EIGHT YOUNG APPRENTICE MAKE A STAND

Greenwich’s eight young apprentices have made a stand, but all in a very good cause. The team working at the Mears Projects branch have completely refurbished a spectator’s stand for long-time community partners The Greenwich Admirals. The club who have been supported by Mears Projects in Greenwich for the past two years moved to new grounds which boasted a derelict rugby stand that had lain abandoned through 15 years of neglect.

The Greenwich Admirals wanted to make use of the stand for its growing band of supporters and asked Mears Projects if it could help. Work on the stand included brickwork repairs, doors and window for the back of the stand, railings, new roof and a full redecoration. The project not only provided an important new facility for Greenwich Admirals but key training on crucial practical skills for the eight apprentices.

Cementing this partnership, the Admirals ground has also recently been used for a fund-raising football match between Greenwich Council and Mears Projects which raised £540 for the local Demelza Childrens’ Hospice in Eltham. The stand is clearly visible to traffic in both directions on the A2. Project

Manager Geoff Dishman said: “We are pleased to continue our support to The Greenwich Admirals who do so much valuable work with young people in the local community. This sits nicely besides what we are trying to achieve with our own young team of apprentices (Tommy Nightingale, Tony Mackay, Ricky Mitchell, Chris Harrison, Dale Mallon, Connor Spencer, Danny Hills and Jack Shevlin) who carried out the bulk of this work. They learned many new skills under the watchful eyes of both Brian Puxty (Training Manager) and Eugene Mikalauskas (Training Officer) during the course of this project which provides the valuable training they need for the NVQ2 they are all working towards.”

With the stand now in use the club will concentrate over the next few months on completing the internal works which will include both a ladies and gent toilet, equitment store, club office and a fully operational kitchen. It is planned to have everything completed by the begining of the 2010 season.

NEW STRIPS 2010

With the exspansion of teams next season the club will be purchasing new strips across all age groups where finance is available.

With this in mind the club is pulling out all the stops to secure funding through sponsorship. If parents can look at ways the club can secure funding through organisations they either work for or represent it would go a great way to easing the burdon on the club. An average strip (17 x Shirts, Socks and Short complete with numbers and sponsors logc) will cosy £600.00.

Sponsorship can be agreed privatly or through the club although design must be santioned by the club to ensure continuity.

PLAYER REGISTRATION

With the new season starting in March the clubs needs to up date its player data base.

Over the next couple of mounths we will be visiting all clubs to confirm player participation next season. As last season players already registered will be required to only sign a commitment form from the London Junior League.

Players new to the club will have to complete a formal application (supplied either as a hard copy or on-line) supported by either their Birth Certificate, Passport or Medical Card along with a passport size photgraph.

Collectively we all need to work on recruitment between now and March to ensure we meet the clubs commitment to the London Junior League. Those of you who played last season know the benifits of playing league during the summer has had on your union season - so spread the word both at your club and your school.
